Hey folks,

Welcome to this week’s edition of Metaverse911™ Weekly Dose. Healthcare will be transformed significantly with XR…And it’s happening already No, I don’t mean intangible use-cases but the ones that are tried, tested, and being implemented as you read this.

In our recent LinkedInLIVE, “How will VR, AR, Metaverse & Web3 Transform Healthcare?” with Dr. Amit Raj , Senior Cardiologist and Managing Director at Plexus Med Care, we dived deep into how healthcare can benefit from Immersive tech in the long run and how industries have already started using it.

Before we proceed, I would like to thank our incredibly generous audience who never fail to support us. Your support has been the driving force behind our motivation to be better everyday.

Now, onto the real question…

How Does Metaverse & XR Technology Create An Impact on the Healthcare Industry?

Holographic Patient Consultation

This allows doctors to review ailments in 3D and make accurate diagnosis of a patient’s problems and saves time and money while doing so. This also helps surgeons navigate through the surgery and simplifies the process of explaining the issue to the patient as the problems are visually visible to the patient.

Remote Collaboration

AR, VR, Mixed reality can come in really handy to health professionals as it is difficult to travel to diagnose. This technology helps doctors be there remotely and assist trainees. Through the see-what-I- see technology, the process of learning becomes easier and the cognitive pressure is reduced to enhance performance and training experience in general.

Remote Collaboration

Nurse Training in Metaverse

Metaverse allows nurse trainees to to train with proper procedure and structure that they would find in the real world as well. But this time, they can do it remotely and interact with the avatars and machines in the metaverse eloquently. The nurses can check exposure levels and talk to doctors and professionals present there for guidance by just clicking at the avatar. At the end, the trainees get to see a report on the board mentioning how well they have done.

Training Simulations

The medical curriculum can now be easily brought into the real world in 3D content from using the immersive technology. For example, for students learning anatomy, it can be pretty difficult to understand the 3 Dimensional body of humans. Through holograms, every complex concept, diagram and function of an organ can be explained in a concise manner. And this is not restricted to anatomy, Chemistry, Physics, these holographics make learning fun and engaging.

What are the benefits of Immersive Tech in Healthcare?

  1. Better Insights: Immersive tech aims to connect practitioners and doctors with the data that matters the most and therefore, positively affects the process
  2. Better Experiences: Students can perfect their skills in virtual reality without any outside pressure
  3. Better Care: It further encourages few incisions and focus on using mixed reality to diagnose ailments

And this is NOT THE FUTURE. THIS IS THE PRESENT - Hospitals have started implementing these solutions into their healthcare systems. Here are a few examples:

Sentinel University of Nursing & Health Sciences in America, created an immersive environment of the Sentinel City and Sentinel Town. The clinical emergency simulations in these environments prepare trainees for real-world scenarios. This enables nursing practitioners to practice their critical thinking and leadership skills.

Emergency simulations in an immersive environment can help healthcare staff to prepare themselves for stressful real-life scenarios while treatment. This is a use case for pediatric treatment implemented by Children's Hospital in Los Angeles, USA.

The learner taken on the role of a team lead and directs the avatars of team members to perform treatment. This inculcates the skills of communication and leadership.

Apollo Hospitals, one of the largest healthcare providers in India, has launched an AR-based mobile application called Ask Apollo AR. The app enables patients to have a virtual consultation with a doctor and also provides an AR-based anatomy module for medical students.

Narayana Health, a multi-specialty hospital chain in India, which has partnered with Microsoft to use HoloLens technology for medical training and education. The technology enables medical students to view and interact with virtual models of human anatomy in 3D.

Fortis Healthcare, another major healthcare provider in India, has also started using virtual reality (VR) technology for patient education and rehabilitation. The hospital has developed VR-based modules for patients to learn about their medical conditions and treatments, and also uses VR for physical therapy and rehabilitation.

Cedars-Sinai Medical Center: This hospital in Los Angeles, USA, has implemented a VR program to train its nursing staff in patient care. The program allows nurses to practice patient care scenarios in a realistic virtual environment.
